Southend Shakespeare Company brings Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize winning comedy drama to the Palace Theatre's Dixon Studio, opening for a strictly limited run in March 2026. Telling the story of a family whose lives are upended by a 6-foot tall imaginary bunny rabbit, Harvey is a hilarious and heartfelt examination of mental health and self-acceptance.
Veta Simmons is determined the climb the social ladder. So she's not exactly thrilled that her brother Elwood's best friend just so happens to be an imaginary, talking rabbit called Harvey. Done with embarrassment, Veta decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium - but a bizarre mix-up leads to Veta herself being interned. Now the hunt is on to find Elwood and his furry friend, as Veta is forced to consider whether her brother's faults are more virtuous than she thought.
